Maryland's streets are safer: violent crime is down, the number of police in neighborhoods across the state is up. There was a 14% decrease in violent crime the first quarter, 1997 compared to the first quarter, 1996 ( Maryland State Police Uniform Crime Report) The state has been authorized to hire 225 new troopers. They will all be trained and working by mid late summer, 1998. Maryland has implemented a new "Hot Spots" program to fight crime where it occurs most frequently throughout the state.
